There is No God like My God

Text:  Psalms 89:6  For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

Deuteronomy 4:35  Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.

Introduction:  Last week we explored the greatness of God.  Today we will attempt to understand the uniqueness of God.

The definition of unique

1. Being the only one of its kind

2. Without an equal or equivalent; unparalleled.

We believe that there is only one God.  The world believes in many gods.  Just a quick reading form the book of Acts when the apostle Paul visited Athens and preached on Mars Hill will a glimpse of many different gods that they worshiped.

When considering Jehovah we freely admit that He is an eternal, self existent supreme being.  We state this by faith and the natural evidence of His greatness that we explored last week in our sermon.

God is also described in His word as a spirit; not a material being.  As a spiritual being, God is invisible, whom no man hath seen or can see.  God is self existent and independent there is none above him none before him and none essential to his glory.

Today we will glance at what makes our God, aside from the fact that He is still living, unique…

I.  God is Eternal - Psalms 90:2  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

A. We as children of God believe that we will live eternally, that is our soul and spirit through the new birth process have inherited eternal life and will be united with a new eternal body in the resurrection.

B.  God is not only eternal with respect to the future but also retrospectively, as one who never began to exist, but whoever was and is and is to come.  1 Timothy 1:17  Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Slide Adam Clarke - From the eternity that is past, before time began; to the eternity that is after, when time shall have an end. This is the highest description of the eternity of God to which human language can reach.

II God is Immutable – God’s essential nature is unchangeable Malachi 3:6  For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

A.  Slide Mankind changes - Numbers 23:19  God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

B.  Slide God is immutable in his councils, mind, wisdom and will.  The very nature of His name Jehovah – the self existent one (as one commentator states: He who is) – teaches us of the nature of God.   James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Last week we discussed the sun.  Here the apostle speaks of how the sun does not always shine and give light.  God, in contrast, is immutable (unchangeable) as his light never varies or casts shadows.

III. God is Omnipotent – All powerful Isaiah 43:13  Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

A.  Slide God possesses all power to do whatsoever it pleaseth him.  This power is manifested in the overwhelming wonders of creation.  Psalms 135:6  Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.

B.  This power is demonstrated in His rule and dominion of the world.   Revelation 19:6  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

C.  His power is set forth in our redemption by Christ Jesus.  Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

D.  Jesus acknowledges the power of God: Matthew 19:26  But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

IV. God is Omnipresent – God is everywhere Psalms 139:7-8  Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

A.  I cannot find a place - a spot in the universe, where there is not a God, and the same God. Proverbs 15:3  The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

B.  Slide It is true that we cannot hide from God: Jeremiah 23:24  Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

C.  Slide But  it is also true that there is no place we can go where God cannot help. Acts 17:27  That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

V. God is Omniscient or Infinite in Knowledge Psalms 147:5  Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

A.  God’s knowledge extends to all space and to all creatures Hebrews 4:13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

B. God’s knowledge embraces all that is past, all that is present and all this is to come. 1 John 3:20  For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Acts 15:18  Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

C.  Slide With God noting is doubtful or perplexed or contingent.   Psalms 139:1-6   O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

VI.  God is All Wise Psalms 104:24  O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

A.  Being the source of all knowledge (omniscient) and intelligence, his wisdom is displayed in all his works.  Romans 11:33  O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

B.  The heavens we spoke of last week display His wisdom.  Proverbs 3:19  The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

C.  The earth, animals, man in his complex character and the whole of God’s works all show the divine wisdom of God.  Psalms 19:1  The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

D. How brilliantly it shines  - some call His creation intelligent design and to this I agree.  God’s wisdom far exceeds any that man could conceive.  1 Corinthians 1:25  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

VII.  How Can I Be sure that God is Unique?

Psalms 86:8  Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

Conclusion:  God is truly unique (only one of a kind).  Yet as unique as He is He still makes himself available to us.  And how appropriate that the place we find God is on a throne called Grace

Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
